Honda to close Swindon factory for two months

Honda, the Japanese car-maker, is to close its UK factory during February and March as it slows production amid plunging sales.

This is an exciting time for "Team Swindon", we have massive uncertainty amongst the staff of one of the largest employers in Swindon. The recruiting opportunity is unprecedented. We have a genuine business opportunity for these worried people!

Output at the company’s Swindon site, which manufactures the Honda Civic, will be cut by 21,000 vehicles as part of proposals to cut global production by 79,000.

The 4,800 staff employed at the UK factory will receive full basic pay during the 50 days the factory is closed.

The move by Honda comes as car-makers around the world fall into crisis because of the rapid fall in the demand for new cars.

New figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) showed car production fell by 25pc in October to the lowest levels since 1991 as car-makers responded to the economic downturn and lack of available credit – which has made consumers wary of buying a new car.

Paul Everitt, the SMMT chief executive, warned that further falls in output were likely before the end of 2008.

“The figures are evidence of the scale of the challenge facing the industry and underline the need for prompt action in next week’s pre-Budget report to assist the sector during this difficult period,” he said.

In the US, the world’s largest motor market, car sales are at their lowest level for more than 17 years – leading to the General Motors, Ford and Chrysler, the so-called ‘big three’, pleading for a $25bn (£17bn) bail-out as concerns grow about their survival.

Honda had already announced it was cutting production by 32,000 units in the UK between December and next March and the latest decision was taken because of "a dramatic change in the global automobile market". The company said there were no plans for redundancies.

The cuts mean the company's UK production for the financial year will be 175,000, 23pc lower than the initial forecast.

The other cuts in production will be in Japan, 40,000, and the US, 18,000. The reduction in output in Japan lowers next year's scheduled production to 1.28m units – 1pc lower than last year.

Distinguished Scientist 2008 -- Louis J. Ignarro, Ph.D., FAHA

The following is a overview of Dr Louis Ignarro taken from www.americanheart.org

I am pround to associated with a company that is supported by Dr Ignarro and am very proud of the Herbalife Niteworks product.

Louis J. Ignarro, Ph.D., FAHA

Distinguished Professor of Pharmacology
UCLA School of Medicine
Beverly Hills, Calif.

Louis J. Ignarro was bornin 1941 in Brooklyn, N.Y. and grew up in Long Beach,, N.Y.. He received a B.Sc. degree in Pharmacy/Chemistry from Columbia University in 1962, and a Ph.D. degree in Pharmacology/Physiology from the University of Minnesota in 1966. He did a postdoctoral fellowship at the N.I.H. in the Laboratory of Chemical Pharmacology in 1966-1968.

Dr. Ignarro’s first research position after training was with the CIBA-Geigy Pharmaceutical Company and in 1973 took on his first academic position at Tulane Medical Center in the Department of Pharmacology. In 1985, he accepted the position of Professor of Pharmacology at the UCLA School of Medicine, where he remains today. His current endowed position is the Jerome J. Belzer, MD, Distinguished Professor of Pharmacology.

Dr. Ignarro has received many Awards, most notably: the Basic Research Prize of the American Heart Association; election into the National Academy of Sciences; election into the Academy of Arts and Sciences; election into the American Philosophical Society; and the 1998 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Louis J. Ignarro and two other researchers received the 1998 Nobel Prize in Medicine for their major discoveries involving nitric oxide as a unique signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system. In 1972, Dr. Ignarro discovered nitric oxide causes vasodilation, lowering of blood pressure, and inhibition of thrombosis. In 1986, Dr. Ignarro confirmed his suspicion that blood vessels can make nitric oxide, the active ingredient in nitroglycerin, a common drug used to treat heart conditions. Experiments in 1990 showed that nitric oxide is the neurotransmitter responsible for penile erection, and this discovery led to Viagra, the first oral medication for treating erectile dysfunction.

Dr. Ignarro’s discoveries created an explosion of research involving nitric oxide. In 1986, there were a dozen papers published on nitric oxide and just 10 years later, there were about 7,600 papers. His observations with nitric oxide have made it possible for medical professionals to understand what protects the cardiovascular system against pathological conditions such as hypertension, stroke, coronary artery disease and other forms of atherosclerosis, gastrointestinal ulcers and vascular complications of diabetes.

Dr. Ignarro’s laboratory at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA has never been larger than eight or nine people. Throughout his career, funding for the lab has come from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and local heart associations. In 2000, Ignarro testified before Congress on the importance of NIH funding for basic science research. In his testimony, he said that only in America could the son of an uneducated carpenter receive the Nobel Prize in Medicine.

Ossey Osmond's famous Herbalife Number

I caught this classic Herbalife moment with my camera at the World Team School 2008 in Bournemouth. Not to be missed! I have included Ossey's story below for anyone who does not know it.

Roni’s story
“I am from Fiji, educated in Australia and have battled with my weight since my late teens. When I joined the company in December 1988, after being introduced to Herbalife by a good friend, I went down in weight by 35 pounds in 11 weeks. I was a very disenchanted Secretary and office work bored me to tears! I loved the idea of being independent and having my own business, something exciting that would allow me to use more of my potential. When I saw the business side of Herbalife, I was “IN”! It seemed to have all the answers. I was always interested in health and nutrition and more natural ways to take care of our bodies and something that involved helping other people really appealed to me.”

Ossey’s story
“It took a little while for me to catch on, but when Roni earned $600 very part time in her first month,I had to pay attention! I had lost a lot of money in a property deal, which compounded when I tried to back a Rock and Roll band that didn’t take off, so really, I was open to anything. When Roni attended her first Supervisor School and Seminar and looked around at all the happy, healthy and successful people, she said those magic words, “Why not me?!”
“I started using Herbalife products and my nutrition improved. I saw my 86 year old Mum gain precious weight and a renewed enthusiasm for living. I knew the products were the best and that I could recommend them from my personal experience. Roni started building the business step by step, attending as many meetings as she could to draw on the knowledge and enthusiasm of the successful people and doing whatever she could to help people with the products and the business opportunity. It was hard work but she loved every minute of it, and it NEVER felt like a J-O-B. Now, looking back, we can truly say that the last sixteen years have been the best of our lives. We enjoy good health, a wonderful lifestyle, and most important, the company of some of the nicest people in the world! At the age of 70, I still windsurf seriously and I can do this wherever the wind blows anywhere in the world.Once Roni learned the “skills” of Herbalife, she knew that she could be completely FREE and work wherever and whenever she chose. Sixteen years ago, we were broke and going nowhere, today we have homes in Oregon, Ireland and of course the home in Fiji and we have everything to thank Herbalife for. Talk about “life-changing!”

How much Lead is safe to Consume?

Lead, a mineral for which the body has no use, is naturally found in the earth; in rocks, soil, rivers, lakes, seawater, and even the dust in the air. It has no taste or smell. It is the heaviest of all non-radioactive metals. It is found in virtually everything you eat, drink, and breathe. In a perfect world we would not be exposed to lead at all. In a perfect world there would be no lead in our food, water, or air. However, though we should minimize lead consumption, there will always be a background level of lead that naturally exists. Therefore, the real questions are how much is too much; i.e., how much is toxic, and what can we do about it?

For over 2500 years humans have worked with lead; made utensils, cups, plates and weapons with lead. The real contamination of our planet occurred during the 20th Century with the use of coal, leaded gasoline, metal work (brass and steel), lead paint, production and (improper) disposal of batteries, lead plumbing carrying our drinking water, lead from solder used to seal the seams of cans containing food, leaded pottery, and leaded glassware.

From 1920 to 2000, over 300 million tons of lead was mined and distributed in our environment. It was distributed throughout the atmosphere via combustion, burning of fossil fuels (coal), burning rubber, metal and battery production factories, etc., and has settled as a coating on the entire surface of the earth, land and sea. Tetraethyl and tetramethyl lead placed in gasoline began in 1923, with billions of tons of lead released into the atmosphere from car and truck exhaust. Lead-based gasoline was phased out in 1971 in the U.S. and most other countries. Some countries have lowered the levels of lead in gasoline, while other countries (particlularly in Africa) still use leaded gasoline with impunity.

Over the last three decades the U.S. and many other countries have been slowly cleaning up lead contamination mostly by banning its use. Dangerous areas of lead are mostly limited to soil and air around mines, landfills, old city lands, and manufacturing facilities producing batteries, recycling plants, and munitions.

Children under the age of 5 are most susceptible to lead because they put objects in their mouths, such as toys (and even dirt itself) that have been on the floor or ground. Prior to 1951, lead was used in paint in the United States, and children swallowing paint chips, or soil filled with microscopic paint chips from homes painted with lead-based paint caused permanent neurological problems, leading to today’s concern about lead. In a clean environment, a child putting toys that have been on the ground into their mouths would not be a problem. Yet, eating dirt should be discouraged because dirt and soil have 10 to 100 times the amount of lead than what is found in food. (Sorry folks, Dr. McNamara says the "three-second rule" does not apply, for many reasons. That is, food that is on the ground or in the dirt for three-seconds is considered "untainted" by some, but that's a fallacy, not only due to lead, but also from bacteria.)
I guess, I should first describe a few designations for measuring lead content. One is the proportion of lead to all other components in any material, …in terms of parts per million (ppm). One part per million corresponds to 1 milligram per gram (1/1000 of a gram), or one microgram per gram (1/1,000,000) of material. The other major measurement of lead is the total amount present, in grams or micrograms, depending on the amount present.

We eat, drink, and breathe lead every day. The majority of lead entering our body is from food. We can reduce it, but we cannot escape it. We also eliminate lead everyday; in our feces (lead that is ingested but not absorbed), in urine, sweat, hair, skin, nails, and via the gall bladder through the breakdown of hemoglobin that binds to lead. Usually the amount going in our bodies equals the amount going out. If we have more lead entering our body than we can eliminate then it can build to toxic levels. Lead is found throughout the body, in the blood, soft tissues, but mostly lead accumulates in the bones. Ninety percent of the lead in our bodies is found in our bones. The human body contains lead …the question is, how much is dangerous? The answer is the level that may cause cancer, miscarriages, or neurotoxicity in children.

As the environment has been cleaned up, the amount of lead in our food and water has declined. In controlled drinking water (safe levels), the level of lead is currently limited in the U.S. to 0.015 ppm (0.010 in California). That’s water; but most foods (particularly grains) cannot get to such low levels. Plants take up the lead from the soil. Most of the lead in our diet comes from plants (fruits, vegetables, and grains …particularly whole grains), and less so from meat.
The World Health Organization established the “tolerable weekly intake” level for lead obtained from food at 1.5 mg (1500 micrograms), corresponding to a daily lead intake of just over 0.2 mg (200 micrograms). Although many parts of the world have not yet met these standards, most first-world countries have.

In the U.S., current lead levels found in food range from 0.1 ppm to 0.3 ppm. This amount of lead is not thought to cause much harm, and certainly the lower the better. The average American adult that consumes about 1 kg of food (the average daily intake), with a lead level of 0.1 to 0.3 ppm in “clean food,” consumes between 0.1 to 0.3 mg (or 100 to 300 micrograms) per day. (In the future, “acceptable levels” of lead that is consumed daily will be lowered to less than 50 micrograms per day, ...less for pregnant woman, and less still for children ...but these lower levels can only be attained as the environment is cleaned up.) In the meanwhile, the more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, the more the lead consumed. The more junk food and sugary beverages one consumes the less lead is consumed, however, the health risk is greater for sugar and processed flour than it is for the amount of lead obtained from eating whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. In other words, you're better off eating fruit, vegetables, and whole grains even though that is your greatest source of lead, than you are consuming high-glycemic, processed foods.

For those who eat healthy, particularly whole grains (fiberous, low-glycemic foods, whether in drink formulations or not), the good news is the body can eliminate the amount of lead that is consumed each day, preventing lead from concentrating and causing harm. There is a certain level of lead that is always in the body, but this does not mean that it is enough to cause disease and disorders. Only high lead exposure leads to neurological problems in children, miscarriages in pregnant women, and high blood pressure in adults.

Smoking cigarettes is a concerning source of lead. Five hundred micrograms of lead is found in each inhalation of cigarettes, and 1000 micrograms of lead is contained in one pack of cigarettes. (Most of it is immediately exhaled, but a concerning amount is obviously getting absorbed through the lungs.)

Avoid eating foods grown by the roadside, or grown in gardens near older homes, as these soils are generally more contaminated with lead than other soils. Even the cleanest soil still has lead in it, and that lead is taken up by plants. In particular, whole grain foods contain more lead than meat protein, beverages, and especially water. We need whole grains for a healthy diet, but along with whole grains comes more lead. BUT, is it dangerous to eat whole grains, fruit and vegetables? No, not grains grown in “safe soils.”

What about meal replacement drinks? It is the same as food. If there is more fiber, i.e., low-glycemic carbohydrates, then there would naturally be more lead than beverages made with simple sugars (and no fiber). If there is less fiber, and high-glycemic (simple) sugars then less lead would be present; possibly below the ability to test for its presence (but it would still be present). The drink that contained all high-glycemic sugary carbohydrates (and no fiber) is most likely to cause fat production and oxidative damage through spiking of insulin levels. However, which is better, to obtain harmless levels of lead (less than 100 micrograms per day) by consuming low-glycemic, high-fiber foods, or to eat a poor diet with high-glycemic foods? High-glycemic foods cause weight gain and oxidative damage. Other than smoking, obesity and high-glycemic foods are the biggest contributors to nearly every major chronic degenerative disease today. Our true enemy in our food is not the lead, but the combination of calories, trans fats, and refined, simple sugars.

Now that you understand that there is generally a “non-harmful” background level of lead in all foods, do NOT stop eating fruits, vegetables, and grains (except those grown in contaminated soils) and low-glycemic, high fiber meal replacement drinks. For example, even IF a particular healthy meal replacement drink were to contain 6 to 7 micrograms of lead per serving, and if that person were to consume that drink two to three times per day, for a daily total of 14 to 21 micrograms, that is still FAR LOWER lead consumption than the average 100 to 300 micrograms per day of lead obtained in the average American diet.

It is important to understand, consuming such a meal replacement drink would thereby be protecting you from consuming higher amounts of lead that you would eat from your regular foods.

The really good news is that you can further reduce your absorption of lead through the consumption of specific supplements. Calcium and vitamin C, to name just two nutrients, block the absorption of lead in your intestines. So, make sure you take a quality, balanced, pharmaceutical-grade supplement with healthy levels of calcium (with at least 1000 mg per day) and vitamin C (at least 1000 mg/day).

Herbalife Ltd (NYSE:HLF) Announces 19th Consecutive Quarter of Double-Digit Sales Growth

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 3, 2008--Herbalife Ltd. (NYSE: HLF) today reported its 19th consecutive quarter of double-digit sales growth with third quarter net sales of $602.2 million, an increase of 13.7 percent compared to the same period of 2007. For the quarter ended September 30, 2008, the company reported net income of $58.1 million, or $0.89 per diluted share, compared to $48.3 million, or $0.67 per diluted share in the third quarter of 2007, reflecting net sales growth increase, stable operating margin, a lower effective tax rate, and accretion from our share repurchase program.

"In these turbulent economic times, we believe we're in a fortunate position - at the intersection of health and wealth," said Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Michael O. Johnson. "We offer a solution for part-time or full-time income as well as healthy nutrition and weight-management in the midst of a global obesity epidemic. We are actively refining our growth and infrastructure plans to address global market changes and it continues to be our goal to improve our financial results each year. Although unprecedented fluctuations of the U.S. dollar versus most major currencies are causing headwinds in the fourth quarter 2008, which may continue throughout 2009, our mid-single digit volume point growth reflects our distributors' tremendous opportunity inherent in challenging economic times and they are focused on expanding their businesses."

Net sales performance in the third quarter was attributable to growth in the company's top ten markets, which were cumulatively up 20.9 percent versus the same period in the prior year. Six of these top markets produced double-digit net sales gains including: the U.S., up 23.4 percent; Brazil, up 47.3 percent; China, up 87.3 percent; Italy, up 27.1 percent; Taiwan, up 20.0 percent; and South Korea, up 30.0 percent. Total net sales growth in the quarter benefited from a 487 basis point favorable impact from currency fluctuations resulting in local year over year sales growth of 8.8 percent.

During the third quarter 2008 we added 52,591 new Sales Leaders (1), which is 0.7 percent lower than the same period in the prior year. However total Sales Leaders (1) increased 10.3 percent to 461,838, which is highlighted by the company's President's Team membership that increased 12.5 percent to 1,164 members and its prestigious Chairman's Club that increased 16.1 percent to 36 members, in each case versus the third quarter of 2007.

The company produced cash flow from operations of $79.7 million during the third quarter of 2008, and invested $32.6 million in capital expenditures, primarily in technology investments to support improvements in distributor services. The company did not repurchase any shares during the quarter reflecting current market volatility and a desire to pay down debt and remain conservatively capitalized. From the inception of the stock repurchase program in April, 2007, the company has repurchased 11.3 million shares at an aggregate cost of $460.0 million, representing approximately 15 percent of the fully diluted share base since the initial authorization.

Richard Goudis, chief financial officer, said, "Our strong balance sheet and cash flow puts us in a unique position to execute against our strategic plan and make the necessary investments to continually enhance the distributor experience, expand into new markets and become more vertical throughout our supply chain without reliance on additional external capital. We generated significant cash flow again this quarter, while maintaining operating margins of 14.7 percent."

(1) See Schedule titled "New Sales Leaders by Region" and "Total Sales Leaders by Region" for more detail

Business Highlights

During the third quarter the company hosted three Extravaganzas and collectively met with over 44,000 distributors. In early October, the company met with over 11,000 North American distributors in Los Angeles. "These events are for training and motivating our independent distributors, cultivating relationships, attracting new sales leaders, and stimulating productivity. "Our message is straightforward; there's never been a better time to introduce someone to Herbalife," said Johnson. "We have an industry-leading compensation plan, healthy nutrition products to help fight the global obesity epidemic, a financially strong company, a global brand and 28 years of success."

During the past several months, two clinical studies using our Formula 1 Nutritional Shake Mix were completed: one at UCLA using the US formula, and one at the University of Ulm, Germany, using our European formula.

The study conducted at UCLA demonstrated that drinking a Formula 1 shake every day is an effective way to manage weight, as part of a healthy active lifestyle; and personalizing your shake with additional Personalized Protein Powder helps promote the loss of body fat. The results of this study were published in The Nutrition Journal, August 2008.

The study conducted at the University of Ulm, Germany, was conducted by Dr. Marion Flechtner-Mors, a member of our Nutrition Advisory Board. The study showed that when counting calories, drinking two Formula 1 shakes as meal replacements is a more effective way to manage weight than a conventional food diet and weight loss achieved with higher protein intake led to improvement of certain health factors that are associated with being overweight.

These results were presented in October 2008 at the annual meeting of The Obesity Society in Phoenix, Arizona, and previously at the European Congress of Obesity in Geneva, Switzerland.
